Tesla started officially offering an infotainment upgrade (MCU1 to MCU2 upgrade) to owners of older Model S and Model X vehicles. This upgrade replaces the older computer with a much faster one, along with faster internet and more entertainment features, like netflix and youtube, more video games.
This upgrade originally cost a pricey $2500, but in February 2021 Tesla lowered the price of the upgrade to $1500, making it a bit more reasonable.
I have a 2013 Model S P85+ and I decided to do this upgrade. Sometimes you would have to wait about 20 seconds to start the car while the computer boots up. Using the touchscreen was a little laggy.
After the upgrade I have been much happier. Everything is faster and more responsive.
Many more video games have been added to the Tesla Arcade. You can even plug in an xbox controller to the usb port. Cuphead, CatQuest and Stardew Valley are great console quality games to help pass the time. Beach Buggy Racer 2 is a Mario Kart style game that even be played with the steering wheel and pedals.
The web browser option was there before, but never seemed to work. Now the web browser is working and I have found it to be a very useful feature.
Is it worth it?
Yes I think so.
